Lesson 15: The Sabbath Is a Day of Worship

The Sabbath Is a Day of Worship

To help each child understand that the Sabbath is a day of worship and rest.

Preparation

  • Vanilla Wafer
  • Copy of the coloring sheet
  • Crayons

Invite a child to give the opening prayer.

Attention Activity

Help the children act out each day of the Creation while you remind them of what was created each day:

Heavenly Father chose Jesus Christ to make the earth according to His plan.  Do you remember how many days it took Jesus to make the earth?  Jesus made the earth in six days.  Have the children hold up 6 fingers.

1 day WM

The first day Jesus made the light and He called it day.  He made the dark and He called it night.  Pretend to be asleep and then wake up, to indicate night and day.

2 day wm

The second day Jesus divided the water.  Some water was on the earth.  Some water was in the clouds in the sky.  Pretend like you are swimming.

3 day WM

The third day Jesus made dry land.  He made the grass and the trees grow.  He made all the plants grow.  Bend over to pick a flower and then smell the flower.

4 day wm

The fourth day Jesus made the sun.  He made the moon and the stars.  Make a large circle with your arms for the sun and a smaller circle with your hands for the moon, and then wiggle your fingers while moving your arms to represent the twinkling stars.

5 day WM

The fifth day Jesus put the fish in the water.  He also made the birds.  Pretend to be a bird flying around the room or a fish swimming in the sea.

6 day wm

The sixth day Jesus made all the other animals.  He made cows and horses and dogs.  He made deer and lions and tigers.  Jesus and Heavenly Father made a man and his name was Adam.  Pretend to be an animal. Walk around the room several times imitating that animal. Then stand in a line and each say, “My name is (child’s own name). I am a child of God.”

7 day wm

Tell the children that on the seventh day, Heavenly Father and Jesus rested. They called this day of rest the Sabbath.  Have the children pretend like they are sleeping.

Have the children repeat the word Sabbath a few times.

The Sabbath is a holy day

Read aloud Genesis 2:1–2 and verse Genesis 2:3 to the word day.  When Heavenly Father and Jesus finished creating the earth and everything on it, they blessed the seventh day. It was to be a holy day, different from the other days of the week. The Sabbath is a day for us to rest from our work and to worship Heavenly Father and Jesus.

Which day of the week is the Sabbath?

What did Heavenly Father and Jesus do on the Sabbath day? (See Genesis 2:2.)

Activity

Show the calendar.  Have the children take turns putting the activities on the calendar.  We can play, go to school and work six days a week but on the Sabbath we rest and worship Heavenly Father and Jesus.

Moses and the Israelites traveled many days in the wilderness.  They had fled Egypt from the horrible

Pharaoh that kept the Israelites as slaves.  Their food was gone and they were hungry.  The longer they traveled in the wilderness the more they complained.  The more they complained the madder they got at Moses

.  Moses prayed Heavenly Father for food.

Heavenly Father listened to Moses prayers and told him that “I will rain bread from heaven for you.”

The next morning, there was dew all over the camp.  Dew is little droplets of water that evaporate as the sun comes up.  When the sun came up and the dew was gone, on the ground was what the Israelites called Manna.
bread and honey wm

The manna tasted like bread and honey.  If it is not fast Sunday give each child a Vanilla Wafer.  Every morning when the Israelites woke up there was manna on the ground.

Jesus had rules for the manna.  The Israelites could only pick up as much as they needed for each day.  Some people did not obey and they picked up too much.  Why do you think they did this?  If they disobeyed Jesus and picked up more manna than they needed for the day, the next morning the manna was full of worms.  It smelled bad and they could not eat it.

Jesus had another rule.  The Israelites could only pick up the manna five days.  On the sixth day they could pick up enough for 2 days.  They had manna on the ground every morning but on the seventh day.  Why do you think there was no manna on the seventh day?  The Sabbath day is the seventh day.  The Sabbath day is a day of rest.  On the Sabbath day was the only day that the manna stayed good and didn’t have worms in it.  They would not have to work on the Sabbath.  They could keep the Sabbath day holy.

How did the Israelites get food?

Why didn’t they gather manna on the Sabbath?

Read Exodus 16:26 aloud. The Israelites were taught to not work on the Sabbath. On the Sabbath, Heavenly Father and Jesus want us to think about them instead of about our work. The Sabbath is a very holy day to Heavenly Father and Jesus.

The Sabbath is not a day to work and do regular things but a day to worship Heavenly Father and Jesus.

Worship means to think about Heavenly Father and Jesus and do things that show how much we love them.

The Sabbath is a day of worship

The Sabbath is a happy day because we can worship Heavenly Father and Jesus in many different ways.

What have you done today to show Heavenly Father and Jesus that you love them?

One important way we can worship Heavenly Father and Jesus, or show them that we love them, is by coming to church

and partaking of the sacrament

. Heavenly Father and Jesus are happy when we sing and listen and when we are quiet and well-behaved so we can hear our teachers and feel Heavenly Father’s and Jesus’ love for us.

Activity

Help the children do the following finger play:

I’m Glad I Came to Church Today

I’m glad I came to church today (clasp hands and make steeple of church by putting tips of forefingers together).

I learn to listen (cup hand around ear)

And to pray (fold arms and bow head).

I learn of Jesus up above (point up);

I think of Jesus and his love (hug self).

We also show Heavenly Father and Jesus that we love them by being neat and clean when we come to church. We should clean our faces and hair and wear our best clothes.

Activity

What do we do to worship Heavenly Father and Jesus when we are at church?

What do we do to worship Heavenly Father and Jesus when we are at home?

We should not spend money or shop on the Sabbath. We should not go to sporting or entertainment activities on the Sabbath. We should not work in our yards or gardens or go fishing or hunting on the Sabbath.

There are many things to do at home to keep the Sabbath day holy. We can play quiet games with family members, have scripture stories read to us, make family albums, visit relatives or those who are sick, draw pictures of things for which we are thankful, go on a walk with a member of the family, pray, sing songs, and listen to good music.
