Jesus Christ is the son of Heavenly Father
Each one of us has two fathers: an earthly father
and a Heavenly Father
. Our earthly father is the father of our physical bodies. Heavenly Father is the father of the spirits inside our bodies.
Jesus has only one father, because Heavenly Father is the father of Jesus’ spirit and his physical body. That is why Jesus is called the Son of God.
The Birth of Christ
A long, long time ago, nearly 2,000 years ago, God sent the angel Gabriel
to a young woman who lived in Nazareth. The woman’s name was Mary
and she was going to marry Joseph
Mary was afraid when she saw the angel but the angel Gabriel said “Peace be with you. God has blessed you and is pleased with you.” He told Mary that she would be having a baby. It would be a baby boy and his name would be Jesus. He will be God’s son.
When Mary told Joseph that she was going to give birth to the Son of God he was worried. An angel appeared to Joseph and said “Don’t be afraid to have Mary as your wife”. The angel said that Mary was chosen by God to be the Mother of Jesus. He also told Joseph that Jesus would be the Savior to all mankind. Joseph did as the angel said and he and Mary were married.
Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth and at this time there was a census. The census was ordered because the officials wanted to make sure everyone was paying their taxes. Everyone was ordered to return to the town where their families originally came from. Joseph was from Bethlehem, Mary and Joseph had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem. This was a long way to travel and Mary was going to have a baby at any time
Because of the census a lot of people were traveling back to the places where their families had originally come from, the town was full. Mary and Joseph had to travel very slowly because she was going to have a baby. By the time they reached Bethlehem there was no place to stay. All the inns were full. The only place that Mary and Joseph could find was a stable with the animals
. Mary gave birth to Jesus in the stable and Jesus sleep in a manger
Who were in the fields near Bethlehem that night? (Shepherds, who were watching their flocks.)
Outside of Bethlehem,
shepherds were looking after their sheep.
An angel came to them and said. “Today in Bethlehem a Savior has been born.” The angel told them that the baby was laying in a manger. Many angels appeared and the shepherds heard them say “Glory to God in highest, and peace to everyone on earth”
Heavenly Father wanted everyone to know about his gift to us, so he placed a beautiful new star in the sky
Wise men saw the star and knew what it meant, that the Savior was born. They wanted to bring him gifts. The Wise men followed the star. They followed the star to Jesus. The Wise men brought gifts to show that they loved and honored Jesus. Who remembers what the gifts were? The Wise men brought Jesus gold, frankincense and myrrh. Frankincense and myrrh were sweet-smelling perfumes used in religious ceremonies. All three gifts were valuable and difficult to get. The Wise Men wanted to bring Jesus the nicest gifts they could find. The Wise men bow down and worshipped Jesus, they knew he was the Savior, the Son of Heavenly Father.
When Jesus was 12, Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. Do you know what Passover is? Passover was an important holiday celebrated the time that God helped the Jews escaped from slavery in Egypt, about 1,400 years before Jesus was born. Many people were also traveling to Jerusalem for Passover. On the way women and men traveled in separate groups and in the evening they would meet back up as a family for dinner.
After the Passover celebration Joseph
started the journey home. When it was time for dinner when all the families meet back up together they realized that Jesus was not with them. They were searching all the groups to see if Jesus was with any of them. As a parent there is nothing scarier than when you cannot find your children!
Jesus was talking with teachers and was answering their questions. The men in the temple were surprised at this young boy. Why were the men in the temple impressed with Jesus? (Luke 2:46–47. Note that Joseph Smith’s translation of this scripture says, “And they were hearing him, and asking him questions.”)
Mary and Joseph told Jesus how worried they had been at his disappearance. Jesus told his mother that he needed to be doing Heavenly Father’s business.
Jesus knew He had important work to do as part of His Heavenly Father’s plan.
Have the children stand and do the following activity verse several times:
Young Jesus went to the temple (walk in place)
Before he grew strong and tall (stretch arms up)
To do the work of his Father (hold hands out)
Because he loves us all (hug self).
John the Baptist was telling people that they needed to repent and be baptized. Do you know what repent means? To feel bad about their wrong choices and not to make them again. People would come from all over to listen to John and then be baptized.
The people knew that there was a Savior and the people started to wonder if John the Baptist was the Savior. John told the people that he was not the Savior but the Savior would come.
One day Jesus came to the Jordan River to be baptized by John the Baptist. John was surprised that Jesus wanted him to baptize the Savior. John told Jesus that Jesus should baptize him! Jesus told John that even He needed to be baptized. Jesus needed to be baptized to “fulfill all righteousness”.
John baptized Jesus by
. Do you know what it means to be baptized by immersion? He laid him down in the water until Jesus was completely covered by the water and then brought him back up. After Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened up and Heavenly Father said, Matthew 3:17 “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Have you seen someone be baptized?
One way you can be obedient to Heavenly Father and show you love him is by being baptized when you are eight years old.
Print out the temple and Jesus and the teachers in the temple. Cut out the temple doors and fold back. Have the children color the picture of Jesus and then glue it behind the temple doors.
Bear your testimony that Jesus Christ is the son of Heavenly Father. Express your love for Jesus and the gratitude you feel for him.
Invite a child to say the closing prayer.
