Do the children you teach know what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? Doctrine and Covenants 41:5 can help them understand how to be better disciples.
Write Doctrine and Covenants 41:5 on a piece of paper, leaving blanks where the word “disciple” should be. Ask the children to fill in the blanks, looking in Doctrine and Covenants 41:5 if they need help. What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? Share how you are striving to be a better disciple of Christ.
Slides and Ladders
Give each child a game marker, I like to use M&M or Skittles. Give each child one using a different color for each child.
The first child to go first rolls the dice
Save. If they roll a 5 they move 5 spaces. NOTE: Two or more markers may be on the same heart at the same time.
Up The Ladder or Down the Slide
Anytime a child lands at the bottom of a ladder, the child must climb up to the heart at the top of the ladder.
Anytime the child ends on a slide, that child must slide down the slide to the heart at the bottom of the slide.
Continue until all the children have landed on the last heart “Jesus Christ Loves Me”.
Display the small “Slides and Ladders” game board.
What are the rules if you land on a ladder? What about a slide?
What would happen if you tried to play the game without obeying the rules? Rules are necessary for games to be successful and fun to play.
What other kinds of rules are there besides game rules?
Doctrine and Covenants 42:2, emphasizing the word “obey.” Share blessings you have received when you have obeyed God’s laws.
Children ask lots of questions as they grow in their knowledge of the world and the gospel. How can you use Doctrine and Covenants 42:61, 68 to help them know how to gain wisdom from the Lord?
Cut apart all the legos
. Have the children look up Doctrine and Covenants 42:61. Using the scripture as their reference, let them put the legos in the correct order making a heart
Emphasize the phrase “revelation upon revelation, knowledge upon knowledge.” Explain that God does not reveal everything at once; instead, He gives us a little bit at a time. Explain how a putting the legos together was built little by little. Share an experience when you received revelation that blessed you.
As the children grow, they will likely meet people who want to lead them astray. How can you help the children trust God’s pattern of leading His children through His chosen prophet?
Invite the children to imagine that someone stands up in testimony meeting and tells the ward that he has received a revelation for the Church (for example, that we should no longer drink milk or that we should start holding sacrament meetings on Tuesdays instead of Sundays). He says that we should listen to what he says instead of the prophet.
What would be wrong with that?
Help the children search Doctrine and Covenants 43:1–7 to find out how the Lord gives commandments to His Church.
Find the Prophet
The object of the game is to find the Living Prophet.
Note *There is only one picture of the prophet*
Place all the cards face down in rows forming a large rectangle.
The first player turns over two cards. If the cards match, then they take the two cards and they have another turn. If the cards don’t match they turn the cards over and it is the next players turn.
Explain the Lord’s teaching that only the prophet is “appointed unto you to receive commandments and revelations from [the Lord]” to lead the Church (Doctrine and Covenants 43:2).
Show a picture of the living prophet, and invite the children to share something he taught recently.
Why is it a blessing to have a living prophet today?
Invite the children to choose a law or commandment they feel they should focus on obeying this week. Encourage them to share their goal with their families.
This lesson only includes the color and black and white PDF. It is an interactive lesson so there is no PowerPoint. Both options are now included in a zip drive that will immediately be emailed to you for $2.75.
Please use the lesson free of charge. I am only charging for the visual aids which take a considerable amount of time to create. The art work is mine and my son’s original drawing. Thank you for your help as I try to continue to be a stay at home mom of four boys.
