The Lord needs all of us to teach others that they can come unto Him by having faith, repenting, being baptized, and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost.
. What similarities do they find? Why are these truths important?
Principles and ordinances of the gospel
What is the difference between a principle of the gospel and an ordinance? A principle is a basic doctrine or law
. An ordinance is a sacred ceremony with spiritual meaning that is performed by someone with priesthood authority
The first principles and ordinances of the gospel were the same in Adam’s day as they are today.
Faith in Jesus Christ is the first principle of the gospel.
Why is it important to have faith in Jesus Christ?
We must believe that Jesus Christ is our Redeemer in order to believe that we can repent of our sins and live with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ again.
When we are willing to keep the commandments, even if it is hard for us, we are showing faith in Jesus Christ. Obeying the commandments also helps us increase our faith. Help the children understand that when they attend Church meetings and make other right choices, they show that they are developing faith in Jesus Christ.
The 2nd principle and ordinance is repentance.
Steps of Repentance
When we realize that we have done something wrong, we should admit that we’ve done wrong and feel sorry that we did it. This feeling is Heavenly Father’s way of helping us to know we have done something wrong.
As you say each step of repentance, point to the appropriate word strip.
The first step to repentance is . Pretend you are at your friend’s house. You are sitting on the couch and you best friend walks by. You, without thinking, throw the remote at him and tell him “think fast!” He is not ready for it and moves really quick. The remote hits the flat screen T.V. and shatters it. Of course you are really, really sorry but is saying you are sorry enough?
The second step of repentance is . Who do you ask forgiveness from when you break the T.V.? You should ask your friend’s parents for forgiveness. That can be really scary! They are going to be really mad! Point out that when we repent of our wrong choices, we must ask our Heavenly Father and the person we have wronged to forgive us. We need to admit that we have made a wrong choice and then ask to be forgiven for what we have done. How do we ask Heavenly Father to forgive us? (We ask in prayer.)
The third step is . How can you do this with the broken T.V.? You can tell them you are going to replace it or work the money off.
The fourth step is . Don’t throw things in the house! We need to decide never to make that wrong choice again.
We will know we have truly repented if we feel sorry for doing wrong and we are willing to admit it, ask to be forgiven, try to right the wrong, and decide never to make that wrong choice again.
3rd step is Baptism.
Why do you think a person needs to meet these requirements before being baptized?
How are we baptized?
Why are we baptized? For remission of our sins and to become members of the church of Jesus Christ.
If we truly repent and are baptized, what are we promised regarding our sins? (They will be forgiven).
Where have you seen these steps before? The 4th Article of Faith.
What comes next?
4th step is Confirmation
The fourth step is “Gift of the Holy Ghost”.
How do we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost?
What priesthood authority is necessary for this ordinance?
Not all people who live on earth have the privilege of receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. Only those who have been baptized and confirmed members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have that blessing. When we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost at confirmation, we become official members of the Church.
What is the difference between the Holy Ghost and the gift of the Holy Ghost? The Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead and a personage of spirit who can help anyone who is worthy. The gift of the Holy Ghost is the right we receive after baptism, when we are confirmed, to have the Holy Ghost as a constant companion if we keep our baptismal covenants.
“A person may be temporarily guided by the Holy Ghost without receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Gospel Principles, p. 138).
Why are the first principles and ordinances of the gospel important throughout our lives? We need to always have faith in Jesus Christ and obey his commandments. We need to repent daily. We renew our baptismal covenants each Sabbath day as we partake of the sacrament. We can be guided and blessed throughout our life by listening to the promptings of the Holy Ghost. We can eventually become like Heavenly Father.
The children you teach may face confusing messages about marriage. Doctrine and Covenants 49:15–17 can help them understand how the Lord feels about marriage.
The Savior is our “good shepherd” (Doctrine and Covenants 50:44). He knows that like a shepherd, sheep wander off and sometime can get get into trouble. So He lovingly leads us to the safety of His doctrine and away from dangers such as “false spirits, which have gone forth in the earth, deceiving the world” (Doctrine and Covenants 50:2).
When new Saints started following Him, it often means letting go of incorrect ideas or traditions. This was true for Leman Copley
and others in Ohio who accepted the restored gospel but still held on to some beliefs that just weren’t correct. Leman was a from a group that was called the Shakers. Before converting to the gospel they believed that people should not get married.
Invite the children to find things the Lord taught about marriage in Doctrine and Covenants 49:15–17.
Help the children understand what the phrase “marriage is ordained of God” means
Why is marriage so important to Heavenly Father?
Doctrine and Covenants 50:40–46 contains imagery that can help the children you teach understand how the Savior feels about them.
Prepare a note for each child with these words: Ask me about . Let the children fill in the blank with something they learned in class (give them help if needed) and pin the note to their clothes to prompt a discussion at home.
There are 3 options with the lessons. The first one is a color PDF of the full lesson, all the pictures, scriptures and art projects with the watermark removed.
