Toss a ball to a child, and ask the child to share one commandment that he or she knows about. Keep passing the ball until everyone has had a chance to share something.
As the Church grew and members gathered in Kirtland, Ohio, the Lord revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith what He called His “law” and commanded the Saints to “hearken and hear and obey” it. How can you help the children understand that we are blessed when we are obedient?
Slides and Ladders
Give each child a game marker, I like to use M&M or Skittles. Give each child one using a different color for each child.
The first child to go first rolls the dice
Save. If they roll a 5 they move 5 spaces. NOTE: Two or more markers may be on the same heart at the same time.
Up The Ladder or Down the Slide
Anytime a child lands at the bottom of a ladder, the child must climb up to the heart at the top of the ladder.
Anytime the child ends on a slide, that child must slide down the slide to the heart at the bottom of the slide.
Continue until all the children have landed on the last heart “Jesus Christ Loves Me”.
Display the small “Slides and Ladders” game board.
What are the rules if you land on a ladder? What about a slide?
What would happen if you tried to play the game without obeying the rules? Rules are necessary for games to be successful and fun to play.
What other kinds of rules are there besides game rules?
Doctrine and Covenants 42:2, emphasizing the word “obey.” Share blessings you have received when you have obeyed God’s laws.
The Lord wants His Saints to care for the poor and needy. Help the children understand that when they are serving people in need, they are also serving the Savior.
“I Don’t Need It—Would You Like It?”
Place all of the cards face down on the floor (make sure you print out 1 copy for each child). Have the children sit around the cards. One at a time have the children take a card. Then go around the circle again the children taking another card. If they already have the card, they picked they say “I Don’t Need It—Would You Like It?” to the person on their right. If the child already has the card they turn in face down again. The object of the game is for each child to obtain all the items, food, clothing, shelter, money, and books and games, by either picking the card or receiving them from another child.
Ask a child to read aloud Psalm 24:1.
What does this scripture mean?
Because the earth was created by Jesus Christ under the direction of Heavenly Father, everything on the earth belongs to them. They bless us by letting us use the things they have created. Heavenly Father and Jesus want us to share what we have with others, especially when we have more than we need. Sharing is one way we can show our love for Heavenly Father and Jesus and thank them for all that they have given us.
Law of Consecration
Have a child read Doctrine and Covenants 42:30 aloud. Ask the class to follow along, looking for what the Lord revealed regarding the poor.
What do you think it means to “remember the poor”? The Lord wants us to care for the poor and those in need.
The Lord commanded the Saints to consecrate their properties to support the poor.
What do you think consecrate means?
In the early days of the Church, the Saints were commanded to share with each other everything they had been blessed with. This commandment was called the
law of consecration.
Scriptural and Historical Accounts
When the Saints began gathering in Ohio in early 1831, the Prophet Joseph Smith
was concerned because many of them were very poor and did not have the things they needed, such as food
, and shelter
. The Prophet began looking for a way to help these poor members of the Church.
You can help the children avoid being deceived throughout their lives by teaching them, while they are young, the Lord’s pattern for leading His Church through the living prophet.
Find the Prophet
The object of the game is to find the Living Prophet.
Note *There is only one picture of the prophet*
Place all the cards face down in rows forming a large rectangle.
The first player turns over two cards. If the cards match, then they take the two cards and they have another turn. If the cards don’t match they turn the cards over and it is the next players turn.
Explain the Lord’s teaching that only the prophet is “appointed unto you to receive commandments and revelations from [the Lord]” to lead the Church (Doctrine and Covenants 43:2).
Invite the children to choose a law or commandment they feel they should focus on obeying this week. Encourage them to share their goal with their families.
There are 3 options with the lessons. The first one is a color PDF of the full lesson, all the pictures, scriptures and art projects with the watermark removed.
The next option is all the pictures in Black and White
The 3rd option is a PowerPoint with all the pictures and scriptures that you can pull up on your device. It is like having a digital copy. It eliminates the printing and the cutting out. This makes the lesson easier come Sunday morning.
All three options are now included in a zip drive that will immediately be emailed to you for $2.75. You can pick and choose from all three options to make your lesson just right for you!
*All purchases are final. Because of the nature of the digital product, no refunds will be available. I will how ever do whatever I can to make the download available to you.
